The tech giant is yet to spill the beans on what P stands for! So as of now you are free to make your own guesses, however, confine them to the confectioneries alone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u263a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our team of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/mobile-technologies\/android-application-development\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Android app developers <\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was excited to play with the Android P developer preview 1 and they just got a glimpse of the features that the final version of Android P would bring. Here\u2019s what we have to share with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>UI enhancements<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our developers in the current developer preview 1 observed few <strong>UX\/UI<\/strong> touch-ups and it is expected that Google would add still more new features and deal with some over the course of months. Few more developer previews are on the line till the final version is released. Let\u2019s take a note at how the interface changes included in Android 9 Preview 1 differs from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/google-to-reveal-android-o-will-solar-eclipse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features of Android Oreo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>New side-positioned volume panels<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6042\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6042\" style=\"width: 679px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6042 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/New-side-positioned-volume-panels.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"518\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source Phonearena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Android P, the volume panel is positioned on the right of your screen and appears quite sleek and modern. It consists of two discrete elements:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A volume slider which lets you mute all media sounds quickly and also enables you to control the volume of any accessory or connected device.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A ring mode window that allows you to mute or unmute the sounds while it is ringing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you long-press any of these two elements then you will be taken to the sounds menu immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Major revamp of quick settings<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will see a major overhaul in the Quick Setting tiles which now features teal-coloured circular icons. Furthermore, a big gap of several pixels separates the pending notifications from the quick settings. Our <\/span><b>Android development experts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found the new tiles a bit ugly, to be honest, and we hope that this change does not find its way to the final version of Android P.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Status bar clock repositioned<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6043\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6043\" style=\"width: 679px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6043 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Status-bar-clock-repositioned.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"220\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source Phonearena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, call it a shock or surprise\u2026 the clock status bar clock has witnessed a major overhaul. It now rests on the top left part of the screen, which used to be in the top right corner since times immemorial. It appears that Google has made an attempt to build equilibrium between the two sides of a display with the notorious notch present. Otherwise, once you clear all the pending notifications the left one would remain unpopulated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are finding this new change too awkward to accept then you can give your feedback to Google developers so that users are eventually allowed to choose the clock position as per their discretion.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Unwelcome tweaks in the dock<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6044\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6044\" style=\"width: 679px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6044 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Unwelcome-tweaks-in-the-dock.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"679\" height=\"277\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source Phonearena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google brings back the prominent white background, once seen in the first-gen <strong>Google Pixel\/Pixel XL<\/strong>, \u00a0with the default launcher of Android P \u2013 the Pixel Launcher P-4623511. No doubt the white background appears old-fashioned when compared to the visually appealing dock of the current Pixel stock. We very much wish that this change does not make it to the final version.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Colourful and vibrant settings menu<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6045\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6045\" style=\"width: 668px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6045 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Colorful-and-vibrant-settings-menu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"668\" height=\"770\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6045\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source Phonearena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you find the monochrome icons of Android Oreo boring? If yes, then you would be happy to know that the Android team has iterated the main settings menu with colorful hues to sport lively icons. Some of our <\/span><b>Android developers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believe that they are going to miss the overall serious tone of the previous iteration. At the same time, few developers feel that the colorful icons in the settings menu appear way more playful.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>New smart rotation mode<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6046\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6046\" style=\"width: 716px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6046 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/New-smart-rotation-mode.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"716\" height=\"411\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6046\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source Phonearena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, if you disable auto-rotation of the display from settings and then you have to go all the way to settings to enable it if you want to view something in a different orientation, right! Not anymore, as in Android P, a rotate icon will appear in the navigation bar. The screen will rotate once you tap the icon; otherwise, it will disappear in few seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Message threads in notifications<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6047\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6047\" style=\"width: 725px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6047 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Message-threads-in-notifications.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"725\" height=\"517\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source Phonearena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now you can see messages as threads in your notifications. Usually, you would be able to see the last two messages at a time in the notification shade. This means that you would not need to leave your current screen in order to keep up with the events occurring in the thread. This is a welcome move by Google, which we think would be liked by most of the users.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Advanced screenshot controls<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6048\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6048\" style=\"width: 680px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6048 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Advanced-screenshot-controls.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"596\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6048\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image Source Phonearena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case you do not like the hardware shortcut for screenshots, here is good news for you. Google is including useful features in stock Android; screenshot button is added to the power menu which will pop up if you simply hold up the power button. Tapping the screenshot button in the power menu you can quickly snap your screen now.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Changes for Android developers<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an app is in the background of your phone and is inactive, it won\u2019t be able to access your <\/span><b>mic<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>camera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and all <\/span><b>SensorManager<\/b> <b>sensors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; yes! Android P brings this restriction.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Android P offers built-in support for more image and video codecs, which includes <\/span><b>HDR VP9 Profile 2 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>HEIF<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So, HEIF would bring Android more in alignment with the way iOS does things. Furthermore, Google has promised that later this year, it would provide more information on \u201cenhancing and refactoring the media APIs to make them easier to develop and integrate with.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your phone is having more than two cameras on the back, then Android apps will be able to control them more granularly in a standard way. This is because Android P comes with a <\/span><b>multi-camera API <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which would enable the apps to individually request data simultaneously from more than one camera sensor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Android P offers support for Wi-Fi RTT (Round-Trip-Time) allowing apps to get indoor positioning data with an accuracy of 1 to 2 meters. It operates by evaluating the distance to different Wi-Fi access points.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You would no longer need to do a switch-apps-and-copy-and-switch-apps-and-paste dance as Android P comes with improved <\/span><b>autofill<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> making it easier for password managers to help you enter passwords for you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhanced performance for <\/span><b>Android Runtime (ART)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and applications are written in <\/span><b>Kotlin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google developers refine the power saving features <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/training\/monitoring-device-state\/doze-standby.html#understand_doze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doze<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/training\/monitoring-device-state\/doze-standby.html#understand_app_standby\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">App Standby<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developer.android.com\/about\/versions\/oreo\/background.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Background Limits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to further enhance battery life. You must try your apps with these and send feedback to Google Android developers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Android P is <\/span><b>targeted at modernizing the foundations of Android<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the applications that run on this platform thus ensuring long-term initiatives. All the apps submitted to the Google Play should aim their updates at Android Oreo by November 2018 and by 2019, they support 64-bit hardware.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google is also working towards <\/span><b>improving app compatibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by encouraging developers to use Android\u2019s <\/span><b>public APIs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the SDK or NDK. Moreover, they are <\/span><b>gradually restricting access to selected non-SDK interfaces.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>When to expect the final version?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6036\" src=\"https:\/\/www.heliossolutions.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/8.jpg\" alt=\"8\" width=\"675\" height=\"171\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As shown in the figure above, you can expect the final version of Android P in mid-August which conforms to previous Android releases. Here\u2019s a tentative breakdown of what you can expect from future Android P developer previews:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preview 1 (initial release, alpha) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preview 2 (incremental update, beta)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preview 3 (final APIs and official SDK, Play publishing, beta)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preview 4 (release candidate for testing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preview 5 (release candidate for final testing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The final release of <\/span><b>Android Open Source Project (AOSP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ecosystem<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Conclusion<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Android P is shaped by the long long-termtiatives of the platform; however, in Preview 1 you can witness incremental improvements to the operating system.
